The 1779 "Sauthier" map of Vermont, actually a map of New York (Vermont was yet un-named) captures the state at a very early period.  Rutland - then called "Socialborough" is in the center of this segment. Note that there is no road leading northeasterly across the mountains.  The large peak on the right edge is Killington.
